Shine a Light!

I never thought I would run another marathon. Laying in the ER on April 22, 2023, face busted, consciousness fading in and out, heart racing above 150, and being rushed into head and heart scans, I had no clue what just happened. I never expected this, as I was to run the Boston marathon 5 days earlier, but a nasty virus forced me to withdraw just hours before the race. After the virus, plastic surgery, AFIB, and trips to doctors, the ER, OR and PT, it was a long road back.

I slowly got back to running, but now to “Run for a Higher Purpose.” One such purpose is to “shine a light” on those doing good deeds. As I prepare to run the NYC Marathon on November 2nd, I’m highlighting a small local non-profit, RallyCap Sports, which provides inclusive sports programs for children and young adults with special needs. Everyone should have access to playing sports and the joy and teamwork associated with it. “Sports contribute to the love of life…” John Paul II

I have seen them in action; the smiles on their faces for hitting a softball and running the bases or hitting the volleyball over the net. The volunteers are awesome interacting with the players. Love is present at a RallyCap event. The volunteers are examples of the great commandment to “love thy neighbor”.

Marathons take months of intense training and a few grueling hours on race day. But running a marathon is nothing compared to what parents of special needs children experience; there is no finish line where they can rest. It’s a lifelong vocation. RallyCap gives them a short break to watch their son or daughter have fun with friends and become part of the RallyCap “community”.

I’ll be thinking about their smiling faces and praying for the players, parents, and volunteers during my run. It will be an awesome 26.2 miles. Any donation will be greatly appreciated, as this small non-profit makes the most of the donations they receive - putting smiles on their players’ faces and joy in their heart. Thank you.

Compete Well, Finish the Race, Keep the Faith!
